The City of Bristol, Dnalgne

Map of Bristol

View of the cityBristol is the captital of the kingdom that calls the continent of Dnalgne its home. The city is dominated by the great castle of Shandyrot, a massive complex of walls and towers surrounding gardens and administrative buildings all intermixed with residential facilities for the royal family and other inhabitants.

The city population is around 22,900 inhabitants.

The city hosts a wide variety of attractions and sights worthy of the casual traveler. Most inspiring of all are the many religious temples and churches throughout the city.

The Wharf District

Bristol has a protected harbor that is entered through a gateway that is formed from the drawbridge complex for the castle Shandyrot. Tolls can be collected from traffic coming or going. In addition, the port can be closed simply by lowering the drawbridge. Shandyrot Toll Bridge

The wharf district itself is divided into two areas. The castle docks are restricted to incoming and outgoing traffic for the castle only. Any other traffic is highly discouraged and frowned upon. The other area, divided into north and south, compromises the city wharf area. The small north side caters to shipping and the manufacturing of ships. Most of the traffic is limited to supplies to support these purposes. The south docks feed the commerce of the city and are the busiest of all the dock areas.

Bristol: Economy

Harbor View from southBristol as a trading center is average. It is not an exceptional port, but the business conducted is sufficient to promote the economy.

Its main exports are coffee, fruit, quernstones, and meat.

Its main imports are anvils and large ships.

Bristol itself is well known for its class of small merchantmen vessels. Quick and sleek, these craft carry a good cargo and can move across the waters with top speed. They are sought after by many of the merchant masters of the world.

Bristol: The Races

Bristol is a city with a mixed population of humans, dwarves, gnomes and elves. No one race dominates the population mix. Each race has its own separate quarter where the predominate race is maintained, but most of the city maintains a mix of the four races.

Miscellaneous Businesses

Fighter's Guild

In a society with its management heavy in the military heiarchy, it is natural to find a strong fighter's guild present in the capital city. This is the largest guild in the country. Many of the great fighters of the land owe a secondary allegiance to this guild which provides a list of expert trainers to anyone in need of them.

Artificer's Guild

The finest naval engineering minds in Dnalgne and other ports of the world are members of the Bristol Artificer's Guild. All members of this guild are renowned for their skills and expertise in the crafting of fine military ships and the outfitting of the same with proper defenses and offensive abilities. It is this guild whose guidance and presence has given Dnalgne its great navy.

A new addition to the Artificer's Guild was the introduction of the new Naval Flying Academy, whose purpose is the development and engineering of fine flying ships.

Government

River Bridge from east in harbor, Wurtenmanstoe on right.Bristol is governed by the incumbent queen of Dnalgne. She is Queen Mary Victoria of Rochester. Holding the royal charter, she is sole sovereign of all the lands known as Dnalgne. The royal guard is administered by a stout ancient elven warrior called Timeless Barrington the General. The royal coffers are maintained by Knight William the Bailiff. Using the feudal land management system, the lands are all owned by the Queen, who grants them to her loyal knights, earls, counts and barons. Each landowner owns land through fealty to either a greater knight, or the queen herself. The concept of fealty produces the strongest military tie known in Metaphaze. Any threat to the kingdom can be dealt with efficiently and quickly by a massing of troops all of whom have been sworn to someone higher in the heiarchy. The queen maintains her own loyal assembly of honored knights, known as the Knights of the Dragon. All of whom sport some type of dragon on their devices. Twelve positions of honor are reserved for the best in all the land. Ten of these positions are presently filled, with two open positions. The knights of the dragon call Wurtenmanstoe as their home chapel and can be found there often in prayer when they are in town.

Major Temples in Bristol

As a religious center, the city has a number of church related structures. Along the eastern side of the city, south of the castle are a number of minor temples. The majority of the gods worshipped in the city are represented in some fashion in this area. They include most of the following list.

Yu-huang
Lu-hsing
Nut
Horus
Amen-Re
Ikelos
Terminus
Hecate
Hari-Hara
Varuna
Durga
Surya
Aditi
"Precious Twin"
Ershkigal
Picumnus

In addition, several other sights are significant. The most obvious and largest is the cathedral of Wurtenmanstoe. It is a lofty structure, only dwarfed by the castle itself. Two lofty spires actually rival with the central castle tower for tallest structure in the city.

Another tall building is the Tower of the Holy Mother. This building with its complex of support structures is both an abbey as well as a school. Most of the population of the city send their children to this school, making the population of Bristol one of the most educated of any city in Metaphaze.

The final exceptional religious building in the city of Bristol is the Temple of the Holy Grail. A domed topped structure a full city block in diameter, it is both a marvel of architecture as well as a magnificent religious structure. The inside of the building is unmarred by any internal supports. The principal investitures performed by Queen Mary are done in this building. A great golden dais occupies the center of the floor and the knights and people of the land can gather as a circled mass around the dais to watch the spectacle.

About two hours outside of the city is the great Abbey of Tincturn, sporting it's own Cathedral, built by the Order of Bophont Genits.
